Transfer Station Policies
(Effective December 2023)
Recycling mandatory as of 11/1/89
A RECYCLING PERMIT is required for the drop off of recyclable material at the County owned stations. The fee is $75.00/yr for residents under the age of 65. $50.00 for residents 65 yrs of age and older and $125.00 for out of County residents. You could also pay a one time charge of $5.00 or $125.00/ton over the scale at the Greenport Transfer Station.
RECYCLABLES: Tin and aluminum food and beverage cans, plastic bottles, jugs, tubs or jars #1, 2 & 5. Glass bottles (green, clear, brown) and aseptic containers (plastic coated milk and juice containers). Please make sure your recyclables are free from any outer packaging and lids/caps and MUST be clean of food and debris. Do not flatten your tin and aluminum cans. Do not include antifreeze or motor oil bottles, as they are not recyclable - they should be placed with your garbage. NO PLASTIC BAGS.
PAPER PRODUCTS: All recyclable paper products may be mixed together. These items include newspaper, corrugated cardboard, magazines, junk mail, office paper, brow craft bags and phone books. Boxboard such as cereal, tissue and shoeboxes are also acceptable. This material should be kept separate, placed in a brown bag or tied with twine. All commingled paper should be placed in a brown paper bag or kept loose.
YARD WASTE: Small quantities of residential yard waste, which included grass clippings, branches no bigger than 2" in diameter and 3' in length, leaves and twigs may be brought into the Greenport Station ONLY. Any large pick up loads trailer loads or dump truck loads must be taken to one of the private companies located in the County. There is a charge of $50/ton for disposal or a $5.00 minimum charge to dispose of the material.
ELECTRONIC WASTE: Accepted at Greenport Transfer Station free of charge.
WE DO NOT ACCEPT STYROFOAM OR WRAPPING PAPER: It is considered household garbage and will be charged accordingly.
CONSTRUCTION & DEMOLITION DEBRIS: Large quantities must be brought to the Greenport Transfer Station. Please contact the station or the Solid Waste Administration Office at 518-828-2737 for further information pertaining to fees. The current price per ton is $150.00.
NO HAZARDOUS WASTE: Please contact our office for proper disposal.

Please contact 518-828-2737GREENPORT STATION SCALE: Municipal solid waste and construction and demolition debris is prorated at $150.00/ton. There is a $10.00 minimum.
Check or Money Order can be made out to "Columbia County Treasurer"
Credit Card payment is accepted (with an additional 2.35% surcharge) at the Greenport Transfer Station Only; at the scale or in the Administrative Office.
Please note: The Administrative Office is NOT OPEN on Saturdays.
